As one of the major routes through Cullman and a key entry point into downtown Cullman, the corner of West Main Street (Highway 278) and 4th Avenue SW is currently an underutilized asset to the city. Planning for a New Lifestyle Center
The West Main Street and 4th Avenue Gateway is an ideal location for an upscale shopping district. Similar in concept to the Bridge Street Town Centre in Huntsville, Alabama, the property can be developed into a pedestrian-friendly area with boutique retail stores and restaurants. The shopping district would not be anchored by large retailers, but would feature a mix of smaller stores selling clothing, home furnishings, jewelry, gourmet foods and other niche items.
Building a German Village
More than a shopping district, the West Main Street and 4th Avenue SW Gateway could become a destination, drawing tourists into downtown Cullman. Relying on the German roots of Cullman, the architectural elements of the buildings and the design focus of the entire project would be centered upon Cullman’s sister city Frankweiler and historical German architecture. Particular attention would be given to small details on the buildings, reflecting medieval, Schwabish and Bavarian influences.

If developed properly, a German shopping district would be the only one of its kind in the North Alabama area. As such, the lifestyle center would help draw new tourists to Cullman, which could help increase sales for other downtown merchants and bring a boost to the local economy. The center would also provide more shopping and dining options for the residents of Cullman and the surrounding area, adding to the quality of life of Cullman’s residents.
